John H. Clark (born May 18, 1849 in Galway, Ireland – July 26, 1922 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) was an Irish-American boxer. He was born in County Galway, but spent most of his childhood in England before moving to the United States. Clark was a clog and jig dancer before pursuing a career in prize-fighting. He was the Lightweight Champion of America for two streaks before losing to Arthur Chambers in 1879 following a 136 round bout. He owned a billiard hall and boxing school in Philadelphia.
One year after the Phillies came into existence, J. Alfred Clark founded Clark’s Iron Foundry. Manhole covers can be seen today in the Delaware Valley. The Clark box that he invented are used today and called the water box frames and covers.
W.Howard Clark, Sr. expanded the business with more foundries in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. They employed more than 6,000 employees at one point.
Edward J. Clark, Sr. , Howard’s brother, started the accounting and tax service called Clark Associates. Edward J. Clark, Jr (Ted) runs the business today.
